On 22 February 2019, Cruz's girlfriend filed a complaint seeking a 50B domestic violence protective order to protect herself and her children from further acts of domestic violence by Cruz. In Randolph County File 19 CVD 385, the court issued an immediate protective order for the girlfriend on 22 February 2019. The verified allegations which led to the issuance of the immediate order stated that on 21 February 2019, Cruz became upset with his girlfriend and called her names, such as "slut" and "whore". Then she stated that Cruz "jerked me by my jeans from a sitting position to a laying position, then kept jerking me until I was off the bed and grabbed my neck and jerked me around, and then said, 'Do you like that, Bitch?', and then took my pants off, and his daughter was watching, and he unzipped his pants and pushed me down on the bed and held me there while I was crying...and told me that if I left or went away he would burn all my stuff..".
The court on 14 March 2019 granted Cruz's former girlfriend a permanent protective order which orders Cruz to have no contact with his former girlfriend, to stay away from her residence, her place of employment, and her children's schools.
